September 11 - Online (sometimes streaming) Media
Presenter: John Tubbs, Multimedia Specialist College of ACES-ITCS
Post-synopsis
John gave a thorough summary of the tools and techniques of professional Web multimedia, covering streaming formats (Real, Windows Media, Quicktime, and MP3), and the hardware and software required. He emphasized the importance of beginning with very high quality audio and video, and described the entire workflow: capturing, editing, mastering, encoding, and publishing to the Web.
He demonstrated several applications of streaming media with his own work for the College of ACES, and discussed the emergence and general coolness of SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) as a W3C Recommendation (see http://www.w3.org/AudioVideo/ for more). Also discussed was the need to develop the campus infrastructure and facilities for streaming as production of Web multimedia becomes more important to fulfilling the educational mission of the University of Illinois.

In an effort to meet the needs of University Webmasters, the U of I Office of Publications and Marketing is requesting your input! We'll be creating new versions of the current U of I logo--so it's easier to use: no more editing, resizing, reshaping it so it will work for your website.
Do you wish there was a .png version of the logo? Would it make your professional life easier if the logo was available in smaller sizes? Maybe you need something with stripes? January 8th - Introduction to ASP
Presenter: Josh Potts
ASP or Active Server Pages is a server-side scripting technology built-in to Microsoft's Internet Information Server, as well as several other commercially available web servers. ASP, in an of itself, isn't a scripting language, but a framework that allows web designers to insert chunks of code to be executed within a page prior to that page's being sent to a client. These chunks of code can be written in a number of different scripting languages including VBScript, JavaScript, or PerlScript.
In this seminar, you will see how ASP is integrated with IIS and Windows. We will look at examples of how very simple code snippets can add rich functionality to your web sites. Finally, you will see how to build complex pages that access database information.
This is an introductory brown bag. All that is required is a healthy understanding of HTML. Most of the coding examples will be in VBScript, but knowledge of VBScript will not be necessary for comprehending the information presented.
