Selecting a Content Management System -- Antics and Anecdotes

Panelists:

  • Jack Brighton, Director of Internet Development, WILL Public Media
  • Kim Britton, Business Analyst, Office of Business and Financial Services
  • Jim Witte, Instructional Tech Specialist, LAS Administration

So you think you might be ready for a content management system, but you're not sure where to start. Or maybe you're in the throes of requirements gathering, but can't imagine how you're going to wade through the ever-growing sea of product offerings in the time you've been given (which, by the way, is -2.3 hrs a week).

Maybe we can help. Join us for a discussion with three panelists who've been there. Listen and ask questions as they share their tales of adventure in the quest for the wholly functional CMS.

Among the topics:

  • Defining requirements: who, how, and what
  • Choosing and implementing a system: what, where, and how
  • Show and tell: sample requirements, handy resources, glimpse our sites

Silva -- Open-source Content Management System

Jim Witte, ATLAS

ATLAS (Applied Technologies for Learning in the Arts & Sciences) has been piloting the Silva CMS for about a year. Jim will demonstrate the basic functionality of Silva, and talk about the
strengths and weaknesses of the system.

Quick Silva facts:

  • open source, developed and supported by Infrae, http://www.infrae.com
  • built on the open source Zope web application framework (as is Plone)
  • facilities for versioning, editorial review/approval, templating
  • wysiwyg web-based editor
  • enforces good separation of content from presentation

This is another in our ongoing series/saga on website Content Management Systems. Jim Witte also works with the Drupal and Joomla CMSs, so if we're really nice and/or actually show up after this late notice, maybe we can get him to do some more on those systems.
